Mayor Rahm Emanuel today introduced an ordinance to build a new state-of-the-art facility for the Engine Company 115 on the vacant land located at 119th Street and Morgan Street, replacing the existing Engine 115 facility located at 11940 South Peoria Street. The new facility will be the second-largest fire station in the city, housing a Chicago Fire Department (CFD) District Office, an Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) radio communication tower and three ambulances.
“This new fire station will not only serve our bravest and finest, but also the residents of the West Pullman neighborhood and Far South Side communities,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Today, we’re one step closer to providing the extra space and state-of-the-art training facilities necessary for our firefighters and EMTs to keep us safe.”
Development of the estimated $30 million project will be funded through the $850 million in issued general obligation bonds that were approved by City Council today. The Public Building Commission of Chicago will manage the development of the site, with an anticipated opening set for summer 2020.
The 25,000-square-foot, single-story fire station will include an indoor physical training space, full-size living quarters, and a workout facility for approximately 20 firefighters/EMTs and eight officers. The facility will also feature a state-of-the-art emergency communication hub, watchtower, open office spaces and a 4-bay apparatus room with a hose drying tower.
This is the latest effort as part of the Mayor Emanuel’s public safety strategy to invest in local neighborhoods by ensuring Chicago’s first responders have the facility space and state-of-the-art tools needed to keep the city’s residents safe.
