In the summer of 2015, the PBC and Chicago Public Schools teamed up to oversee the CPS Air Conditioning Program, a joint effort to install air conditioning units in 35 schools across the city. In 2013, fewer than half of the CPS campuses had air conditioning in every classroom. Since 2013, air conditioning has been installed at 177 CPS schools, and, after these newest air conditioners were installed in 2015, there are only 65 school campuses remaining that need air conditioners.
This project included the furnishing & installation of 300 replacement window AC units and 1,114 new AC units at 35 locations, as well as upgrades of electrical infrastructure as required. To complete this project on a short schedule, 35 schools were split into 3 regions. All AC units were installed by the first day of the 2015-2016 school year.
