The Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) along with 19th Ward Alderman Ginger Rugai and Chicago Public Schools presented the plan for the new Mt. Greenwood Elementary School Linked Annex at a community meeting held on Monday, January 10th at the Mt. Greenwood Elementary School, located at 10841 South Homan Avenue.

The new linked annex will be approximately 26,000 square feet and will feature eight classrooms, a kitchen and dining facility and a linked connection to the existing school building.

Construction began at the beginning of January and the project is scheduled to be complete and ready for students in fall 2011.  The planning, design and construction of the school annex is being managed by the PBC on behalf of Chicago Public Schools.

The addition is designed to achieve LEED “Silver” Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).  Environmental sustainability features include a partial green and reflective roof, durable materials, natural light and views, water use reduction measures along with native planting and permeable pavers for stormwater management.

In addition to its commitment to environmental sustainability and stewardship, the PBC implements an economic sustainability program that includes bid incentives for the employment of apprentices, and minority and female workers; community hiring and resident workforce requirements, helping to employ those closest at hand; and contract provisions that require minority- and women-owned business participation and local business participation.

A date for community hiring intake will be scheduled in the next few months and will be posted at the construction site.

The Public Building Commission of Chicago manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its sister agencies. Mayor Richard M. Daley serves as the PBC’s chairman. Erin Lavin Cabonargi serves as the Executive Director of the PBC. Additional information about the PBC and its projects can be found at www.pbcchicago.com.
