PBC Board Approves New Commissioner, Awards Contract to Build New Southwest Area High School

The Public Building Commission Board of Commissioners today voted to affirm the appointment of a new board member, Bryan S. Traubert M.D, to serve as a Commissioner of the PBC. 

Dr. Traubert was appointed by Mayor Daley in April 2010 to serve on the Board of Commissioners for the Chicago Park District where he also serves as Board President. He is a board certified ophthalmologist, civic leader, health expert, and wellness advocate. Dr. Traubert is also President of the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation (PTFF), an organization dedicated to enhancing public education and quality of life in Chicago.

In other business, the PBC Board of Commissioners today awarded a $62 million contract for the construction of a new high school on the City’s Southwest Side. Located in the Ashburn community at 7651 S. Homan, the 200,000 square foot school implements the new CPS Urban Model High School prototypical design and accommodates 1,200 students. The new school will feature:

  • Steel Frame and Masonry Construction
  • 26 Academic Classrooms
  • 6 Science Labs
  • 5 Computer Labs
  • 2 Visual Arts Classrooms
  • 2 Performing Arts Classrooms
  • College Resource Center
  • Gymnasium
  • Natatorium with 6 lane pool
  • Multipurpose/Athletic Studio
  • Fitness/Weight Room
  • Administrative Center
  • Nurse and Student Support Services
  • Kitchen and Dining Facility
  • Parking Lot

Construction of the school is scheduled to begin in August 2010, with completion intended for school opening in the fall of 2012.

The PBC also awarded the final bid package for the completion of Ogden Elementary School, located on the City’s Near North Side at 24 W. Walton Street. Of the total award value of trade contracts at $31,640,502, 31.28% were awarded to local businesses. To date, the trade contracts have at least 44.11% MBE participation and 12.79% WBE participation, exceeding the PBC’s minimum participation goals of 24% MBE and 4% WBE.

This new school is expected to be open for student population in the fall of 2011.
