Mayor Richard M. Daley today, along with Alderman Ed Smith, representatives from the Public Building Commission, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District and members of the community, officially dedicated the new Campus Park at Marshall Metro High School, 3250 W. Adams.

The new $10 million ten-acre campus park, built by the Public Building Commission, is equipped with soccer, football and softball field. Other amenities include a running track, ornamental fencing, benches, additional parking and other landscaping.

“These are the kinds of projects we need to continue to invest in, even in these challenging budget times,” said Mayor Daley. “Making improvements like these sends a powerful message to our communities that the city cares about the condition of the buildings and the people who use them everyday. We are essentially building parks on the grounds of our schools to improve the quality of life for our children and the entire community.”

The Marshall Metro High School campus park was funded by the City of Chicago, Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Schools.

The city has built more than 110 campus parks throughout Chicago’s neighborhoods for a total of 260 acres of new parks and playgrounds at public schools which increases the amount of open space and provides a safe, positive alternative for children after school where they can keep active and engaged in recreational activities.

From 1989 through Sept. 2010 1,516 acres of new public open space have been added in Chicago.

“This program is a great example of different city departments and agencies working together with the community to revitalize neighborhoods,” said Daley.

“We are committed to investing in the things that make our neighborhoods a better place to live – whether it’s new streets and alleys, police and fire stations, new schools or campus parks like this one here.”

“This new campus park is a wonderful complement to Marshall Metro High School and the community at large,” said Erin Lavin Cabonargi, Executive Director for the Public Building Commission. “As a good steward of the public fund, the PBC is proud to have delivered this project with all the economic and social benefits that only public development can deliver.”
