The Public Building Commission of Chicago today will introduce to the City Council a proposed ordinance that would allow the PBC to acquire property that would become the site of the new Engine Company 18 Fire Station.
The PBC board approved the proposed site, located at the corner of 1301 South Racine Avenue and 1356-76 South Blue Island Avenue, at its February meeting. The tentative site was picked by the Chicago Fire Department based on public safety criteria and the need for a site well-suited for response to emergency calls.
The new station would replace a 127-year-old facility, the oldest in the city. The new fire station would be based on a standardized prototype design, incorporating the most up-to-date firefighting technology.
Approval of the site designation by the full City Council is needed in order to obtain authorization to acquire the property.
