The City Council today approved an ordinance authorizing the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) to acquire property that would become the site for the new Brighton Park II Elementary School. The PBC will manage construction of the school.

The construction project is part of Mayor Richard M. Daley’s “Modern Schools Across Chicago” program. The site, near Rockwell and 48th streets, was approved by the PBC at its April board meeting. The location was chosen by the Chicago Board of Education based on the need to relieve overcrowding in this area of the city, officials said.

“The new Brighton Park II school will provide a modern, spacious, environmentally friendly facility that will serve the educational needs of the community for many years to come,” Mayor Daley said.

Mayor Daley’s “Modern Schools Across Chicago” program will bring 24 new schools and three major high school renovations to the city over the next several years. The program is a partnership with the Chicago Public Schools, primarily funded by city Tax Increment Financing (TIF) dollars and CPS bonds.
