CHICAGO -The Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) announced today that substantial progress has been made on the construction of the Edison Park Elementary School Linked Annex and that the project is 75 percent complete.
Work on the project, at 6220 N. Olcott Avenue in the Norwood Park community, began in early 2013 and is progressing on schedule and under budget.
“”I am pleased to let the community know that the work is moving ahead as scheduled and that we are in the final stages of the project,” said PBC Executive Director Erin Lavin Cabonargi. “This project is an example of our strong partnership with Chicago Public Schools and our commitment to creating better learning environments for our students. I want to thank Edison Park School Principal Pete Zimmerman for his cooperation and support during the project. I am confident the new annex will be welcomed by the students and staff at Edison Park, and we look forward to the completion of the project by the end of the calendar year so that the Edison Park School community can enjoy these wonderful new facilities starting in 2014.”
The PBC was given budgetary authority of just over $14 million for the project, which will add a 30,560 square-foot, two-story annex that will link to the existing Edison Park School and will serve approximately 315 students. The Annex will include nine standard classrooms, one science classroom, a kitchen and student dining center as well as other amenities. The project also includes the renovation of two existing classrooms and an outdoor playlot.
As it does with all of its projects, the PBC has a strong commitment to both economic sustainability and environmentally sustainable development and construction practices. The Hale Annex features environmentally sustainable elements including the diversion of construction waste from landfills, utilization of durable and recycled materials in construction, light sensors and daylight harvesting, high efficiency heating and cooling systems, low flow/low consumption water usage , native and adaptive landscape species and aggressive stormwater management.
Economic sustainability provisions include contract requirements for diverse business participation as well as provisions for a diverse and local workforce.
