The Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) received the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s Patron of the Year Award for the new South Shore International College Prep High School in the Government Category.  Erin Lavin Cabonargi, Executive Director for the PBC, accepted the award at the Annual Patron of the Year ceremony held on November 30, 2011at the JW Marriott.

“I would like to congratulate the Public Building Commission on receiving this important award and commend the PBC for its innovative work on South Shore International College Prep High School,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chairman of the PBC.  “This project and the numerous PBC projects throughout the City have served to revitalize communities and spur economic development. PBC’s efforts to incorporate sustainable design into its projects will benefit our city for years to come.”

In addition to South Shore International College Prep High School, the Public Building Commission was also nominated for three additional projects in the Government Category including the 23rd District Police Station, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Paideia Academy and Ogden International School of Chicago.

“The Public Building Commission is honored to receive this award for South Shore International College Prep High School, in recognition of our agency’s vision to create physical surroundings that inspire and support achievement of the individual goals of those who live, work and visit Chicago and Cook County,” said Lavin Cabonargi.

The new South Shore International College Prep High School implements the Urban Model High School prototype, designed by John Ronan Architects.  The design includes many wonderful amenities.  One key feature of the Urban Model High School prototype design is the provision for community use on evenings and weekends.  The school features separate, independent entrances for both the library and the athletic wing as well as dedicated storage and administrative spaces for the Chicago Park District.
