The Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) this week announced that the demolition and excavation phase for the construction of the new Jones College Prep High School has begun. The site of the future high school is located just south of the current Jones College Prep High School at 700 S. State Street in the Near South community.
The demolition and excavation phase is projected to last through May 2011. The construction phase is scheduled to begin in early Summer 2011, and the school is scheduled to be complete and open for students in Fall 2013. The planning, design and construction of this new high school is being managed by the PBC on behalf of Chicago Public Schools.
The new school is designed for 1,200 students and will be approximately 278,000 square feet with seven floors, plus a lower level. Interior amenities include: standard academic classrooms; computer labs; science labs; visual arts classrooms; performing arts classrooms; auditorium; college resource center; library/media resource center; gymnasium; natatorium with six-lane pool; fitness/weight room; kitchen and dining facility; nurse and student support service; and a state-of-the-art computer network.
The school will also feature an underground parking garage with 67 parking spaces.
All PBC projects are designed to achieve a minimum LEED “Silver” Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Environmental sustainability features included in this project are: a green and reflective roof; durable materials; natural light and views; a reading garden; and a green alley with pervious concrete for stormwater management.
The PBC implements a strong economic sustainability program for each project it takes on. This program includes bid incentives for the employment of apprentices, minority and female workers; community hiring and resident workforce requirements; and contract provisions that require minority- and women-owned business participation and local business participation.
The Public Building Commission of Chicago manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its sister agencies. Mayor Richard M. Daley serves as the PBC’s chairman. Erin Lavin Cabonargi serves as the Executive Director of the PBC. Additional information about the PBC and its projects can be found at www.pbcchicago.com.
