The Public Building Commission (PBC) today reported its Second Quarter 2010 results. The report highlights its $2 billion capital program trending under budget for the second time this year, specifically 4.49% under budget with a $94 million projected surplus from FY 2007 to present.
“The PBC incorporates best practices to bring our projects in under budget, so we can be a good steward of the public fund, and continue to bring essential public projects online for communities throughout Chicago,” said PBC Executive Director, Erin Lavin Cabonargi.
The Q2 report also reflects continued success in the promotion of economic development and human sustainability. For the second consecutive quarter, the PBC exceeded its minimum minority- and women-owned business participation goals of 24% and 4%, respectively, reporting 32.77% for minority business participation and 4.28% for women-owned business participation.
In other business, the PBC Board of Commissioners awarded a contract to Harbour Contractors for the construction of a new City of Chicago 12th District Police Station located at 1412 S. Blue Island Avenue in the Near West Side community area.
The new station is scheduled for occupancy mid-year 2012 and features a two-story, 44,000 square foot masonry building design based on the City’s police station prototype. The building will accommodate a staff of 450 people over three shifts and includes the following amenities:
- Male/female locker rooms
- Roll call room
- Exercise room
- Sally port
- Holding cells
- Interview rooms
- Evidence areas
- 100 seat community room
- administrative and general offices
- 150 foot communications tower
The PBC Board of Commissioners also approved an undertaking request from Chicago Public Schools to move forward on the first Linked Annex Prototype to be constructed at Mount Greenwood Elementary School.
The Linked Annex Prototype provides a linked connection to the existing school and is designed to be a cost efficient alternative to the current CPS addition. This prototype features 8 classrooms, a warming kitchen, a dining facility, bathrooms, and storage and mechanical areas. The school annex is scheduled to be open for students for the fall 2011.
The Public Building Commission of Chicago manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its sister agencies. Mayor Richard M. Daley serves as the PBC’s chairman.
