An ordinance was introduced today to designate land for the new 12th district police station on the Near West Side.

The Public Building Commission of Chicago, on behalf of the City of Chicago, will acquire the property on West 14th Street between Throop Street and Blue Island Avenue once the ordinance is passed by the City Council.

“Law enforcement has evolved, and modern facilities are needed to respond to modern challenges,” said Mayor Daley. “The construction of this new station will not only bring new space and advanced resources to the officers of the Monroe District, it also will serve as a new community anchor for the neighborhood, with features that will strengthen the bond between residents and police officers.”

The new 12th District Police Station, expected to be the 12th new station since 1999, will follow a prototype design with 44,000 square feet available in a two-story building. Features will include a secure detention and line-up facility, a fitness room, locker rooms for male and female officers, advanced communications equipment and a roll call room to conduct training and video conferencing. The station also will have a suite of offices dedicated to the district’s community policing efforts as well as a community room for meetings.

The new station is projected to achieve “Gold” certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Sustainable elements will include a waste heat recovery system, a green roof, the use of recycled materials in construction and the placement of light colored roofing and paving surfaces to reduce the heat island effect.

Construction of the new station will be overseen by the Public Building Commission of Chicago.  The PBC manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its other sister agencies. Mayor Daley serves as the PBC’s chairman. Additional information about the PBC and its projects is available at the agency’s Web site: www.pbcchicago.com.
