On July 26, 2026, the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) celebrates 70 years of public development and community investment in Chicago and Cook County.
Over the past 70 years, the PBC has been part of a collaborative and innovative approach to planning, design, and construction of public facilities and infrastructure on behalf of its client partners.
For seven decades, PBC’s work has transformed communities. Our legacy began with our most iconic project – the Chicago Civic Center – now known as the Richard J. Daley Center and has expanded into hundreds of state-of-the-art schools, parks, libraries, public safety facilities, and infrastructure investments across the city. The PBC’s true impact goes far beyond bricks and mortar. We believe every public project is an engine for economic empowerment. Through targeted initiatives for local businesses, students, and residents, the PBC ensures that the world-class facilities we build today create the community opportunities of tomorrow.
The PBC Board of Commissioners, including Chairman Mayor Brandon Johnson, and representatives from the City of Chicago, Cook County, Board of Education, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District and the Chicago Park District, recently approved a resolution commemorating the PBC’s 70th anniversary and recognizing the dedicated contributions of the Board, leadership, and staff, along with former Commmissioners, leadership and staff, partner agencies and community stakeholders who have guided and supported the PBC’s enduring impact.
Our work is important, our mission is profound, and our partners make it all possible.
